North

Bonaire is an idyllic island that invites exploration by car or scooter. Besides the well-known southern route, the northern part of the island also offers fascinating discoveries. The north route, famous for its rolling cactus landscapes, panoramic views, and the stunning Gotomeer, is the focus of this report where I take you through the key moments of this journey.

The Route You start the north route in Kralendijk. This trip can include or exclude a visit to Washington Slagbaai National Park. For a full experience of the park, I recommend setting aside a separate day.

From Kralendijk, the road takes you along the west coast, past Santa Barbara, towards Gotomeer. Due to one-way traffic between Santa Barbara and Karpata, you follow the route clockwise, passing Santa Barbara Crowns – 1000 Steps Beach – Tolo and Karpata – Gotomeer – Rincon, with a lunch stop at Posada Para Mira – Cadushy Distillery, and optionally Washington Slagbaai National Park – Boka Onima – Seru Largu – back to Kralendijk.

Highlights of the North Route

1000 Steps Beach Just past the upscale enclave of Santa Barbara Crowns, along Queen’s Highway, a coastal road unfolds with multiple beaches and snorkeling spots. 1000 Steps Beach, accessible via a limestone staircase with actually only 73 steps, is a beautiful spot for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, with a high chance of spotting turtles in the crystal blue water.

Tolo and Karpata After 1000 Steps Beach, Tolo is a worthwhile stop, known for its impressive cliffs and views over the blue water. Karpata, a popular dive site less suitable for snorkelers, offers an abandoned mansion to explore across the road.

Gotomeer After Tolo and Karpata, turn right towards Rincon but first take a detour along Gotomeer. This saltwater lake is a major feeding ground for flamingos. Make a stop at a viewpoint with a fantastic panorama over the lake.

Rincon Continue to Rincon, the oldest village in Bonaire, where the authentic atmosphere can still be savored. Try the local cuisine and be sure to visit the Cadushy Distillery. Lunch at Posada Para Mira In Rincon, you'll find delicious local dishes at Posada Para Mira, where you can enjoy specialties like iguana soup and goat stew.

Cadushy Distillery A must-see is the Cadushy Distillery, where you can taste cactus liqueur and other unique beverages, representative of the various islands of the Dutch Caribbean.

Washington Slagbaai National Park An optional but recommended stop is Washington Slagbaai National Park, a large nature reserve where you can enjoy the local fauna and flora, swim at beautiful beaches, and more.

Boka Onima and Seru Largu An alternative to the park is a visit to Boka Onima for ancient rock paintings and Seru Largu for a breathtaking view over the island, ideal for admiring the sunset, before returning to Kralendijk.
